The internet is more portable than books, flash drives or CD’s and stores more information than a set of encyclopedias. Temporary Relieving Teachers visit a variety of different schools, often at only thirty minutes notice. To the TRT, the internet is equivalent to Mary Poppins’ bag as it is now possible to have every resource that might be needed for the day at the touch of a button. Students no longer have to carry heavy books if they have the internet at home and at school. It is quick, easy to share and requires nothing more than pasting an URL into an email. It is less expensive than full colour printing and not prone to the damages of time. It can be updated more readily than books and means instant access to information. Individual computers may loose data but the server will always have a back-up copy. There are some ethical issues and problems related to internet usage, pedophiles who prey on small children who innocently disclose personal information and the anonymous and sinister cyber-bullies who use it to vent their personal anger.
The positive aspects far outway the negative characteristics. Bertrand Russell, in Gross,(1963) once said that given choice, no one would ever study because it is tedious and that people only do so because it is a requirement of society. If this is so, then it is imperative that every teacher become fully conversant with the Internet, multimedia devises and all the technological gadgetry which youth today find fascinating because it is through capturing their interest that learning and education will be encouraged.
